The Book That Keeps Me Focused: Deep Work

I have always admired people who work with intense focus and accomplish significant tasks. Their dedication inspires me to push my limits and see what my mind is truly capable of achieving. The stories of Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Thomas Edison even fictional figures like Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne—who were known for concentrating so intensely that they could work for 36 hours straight—have always fascinated me. I’ve envied that level of focus and have long aspired to cultivate it in my own life.

Yet, in today’s digital world, social media and constant distractions make it harder than ever to achieve such deep focus. However, my habit of reading gave me an intuitive understanding that the ability to focus on intellectually demanding tasks for long hours is not only rewarding but also deeply relaxing. My desire to read many books and learn rapidly led me to a curiosity about the “superpower” of getting important things done faster—so that I could do even more. This natural curiosity is what led me to the concept of Deep Work, and ultimately, to discovering the book on it.

Some people refer to this state as flow—and I’ve had glimpses of how it feels. It’s as if, for a while, my mind shuts off from all the worries of the world. I become fully present, aware of my existence, yet detached from the passage of time. Time feels flexible—hours pass like minutes, and sometimes minutes feel like hours. I lose track of time completely. Deep down, I knew I had to explore the science of focus to create more of these immersive states in my life. By doing so, I could dive into my deepest curiosities with the fullest depth of my mind.

I hope you’ll pick the book after reading this – Deep Work By Cal Newport
